Why Does One Room in My Home Feel Uncomfortable? A Space Clearing Expert’s Perspective

Is there a spot in your home where you feel less happy, less comfortable, or just never want to spend time?

Perhaps you always choose another chair, avoid a particular corner, or feel strangely sad in a room that looks perfectly lovely. Sometimes you can explain it; sometimes you just know you don’t enjoy being there.

I had two of those spaces in my Budapest apartment, and they needed very different things.

But first of all, hi, I’m Lais, a space clearing expert, intuitive healer, author and founder of the Space Clearing Academy. For more than 15 years, I’ve worked with people, their homes and land. If a particular room has already come to mind and you need help figuring it out, you’re welcome to book a free space clearing assessment

But first, let me tell you what happened in my own home. 🏡

Our dining area needed to feel like ours

Being nomadic, I’m used to moving between Airbnbs, where making an apartment truly feel like mine isn’t always easy.

In Budapest, we signed a one-year lease for a partially furnished apartment and brought in the remaining furniture and our decorations. Yet we never wanted to eat at the dining table. We always ended up at the kitchen counter.

We hadn’t given the dining corner our own touch, so I bought a painting, a nicer tablecloth, a plant, a little light and a candle.

The change was immediate. Suddenly, we loved eating there, spending time together and playing board games.

Sometimes a space needs fresh attention. Even existing decoration can stop feeling like you, and changing a colour, picture or arrangement may make it inviting again. Sometimes we have outgrown certain decorations or they start feeling heavy. Maybe they even remind us of a particular time we now have negative associastions with. Ie maybe you bought that painting with your now ex but it's still hanging there even though he moved out.

Our living room needed a different approach

We’d spent quite some time making the living room beautiful, but every time I sat on the couch, I felt sad and lonely.

We later learned that the previous tenant had lived there with his children after a divorce. That brought an image to mind of him sitting in the room feeling lonely.

I couldn’t know what he had actually experienced, but through my intuitive practice, I sensed lingering emotional energy connected to that feeling.

I did a space clearing focused on releasing the loneliness and heaviness I was picking up. Afterwards, I finally enjoyed spending time there.

These two experiences are why I don’t approach every uncomfortable room with the same solution. Sometimes more than one kind of attention is needed.

Three other reasons a room or corner might feel off

1. It reminds you of a difficult chapter

A room can become associated with arguments, a breakup, grief or a stressful period of work. Perhaps a chair was where you repeatedly received difficult news, or your bedroom became the place you retreated to when life felt overwhelming.

You might notice those associations even after circumstances have changed.

In my work, I explore both what the space means to you and what I sense intuitively. Your memories and your experience of the room’s atmosphere may overlap, so there’s no need to rush towards one explanation.

2. You sense an atmosphere connected to previous occupants

Previous occupants’ energy is something I explore in space clearing sessions.

Beyond my own divorce-related example, this might involve what I interpret as an emotional imprint connected to grief, prolonged stress during illness, or repeated conflict.

For example, a previous occupant may have spent much of their grieving time in one corner. In an assessment, I might explore whether the atmosphere I sense relates to that history.

This is my spiritual interpretation, rather than something a property’s history alone can establish. And experiencing grief or illness certainly doesn’t make someone a “negative” person.

3. You feel a presence in the room

Some people describe feeling watched, sensing someone nearby, or feeling unsettled in one particular area.

Spirit presence is one possibility I explore through mediumship and space clearing. However, the feeling alone doesn’t tell us what is happening, and I wouldn’t assume every uncomfortable corner has a spirit in it. My Happy Home Space Clearing Podcast has numerous client case studies that contain spirit stories.

My Bangkok experience introduced me to this side of the work, but each situation deserves its own attention. I want to understand what someone is experiencing rather than fit their home into a story I already know.

What can you try when a room feels uncomfortable?

Spend a few quiet minutes there and write down what you actually notice. What feels uncomfortable, when does it happen, and does it change?

Check the seating, lighting, temperature, airflow, noise and clutter. Then consider whether the space reminds you of something difficult or simply no longer reflects your taste.

Make one manageable change and notice the difference.

Your entrance counts, too. If you feel overwhelmed as soon as you come home, gradually clear the accumulated belongings, give shoes and bags somewhere to go, and wipe the entrance door inside and out.

You don’t have to transform the whole apartment in one afternoon. Your front door is a perfectly respectable place to begin.

Frequently asked questions

Why does only one room feel uncomfortable?

Rooms differ in their lighting, layout, use and personal associations. In my practice, I also explore whether their energetic atmosphere feels different. Start by noticing what is specific to that room rather than assuming the whole home needs the same treatment.

Why do I feel uncomfortable in my new home?

Unfamiliar surroundings, someone else’s furniture and a lack of personal touches can leave a home feeling less welcoming. Our dining area was a good example. Some people also want support exploring the home’s history through a spiritual lens.

How do I know whether I need redecorating or space clearing?

There isn’t a universal test. Observe the space and try practical changes first. An intuitive assessment can offer my perspective on the spiritual side, including whether space clearing seems appropriate or whether there are steps you can take yourself.

Why hasn’t incense changed how my room feels?

Incense won’t change uncomfortable seating, an awkward layout or what a room reminds you of. In my experience, it also doesn’t address every situation I encounter in space clearing. Understanding what needs attention helps you choose a more relevant next step.

Your home deserves an individual approach

Similar feelings don’t necessarily have the same explanation, as my dining corner and living room reminded me.

If something still feels off and you’re unsure how to approach it, book a free space clearing assessment at spaceclearingacademy.com or contact me here. We can explore your experience and discuss whether my work might be suitable for you.
